Sauerkraut

When compiling my 101 list, I decided to include homemade sauerkraut. I really enjoy sauerkraut on hot dogs, but don’t particularly enjoy buying something that only I eat. πŸ™‚ So I decided to take advantage of the St. Patrick Day sales and try my hand at making sauerkraut.

One of my little helpers. πŸ™‚

Unfortunately I didn’t get any pictures of the cabbage being shredded, packed into the crockpot or the salt being sprinkled in. My hands had raw cabbage on them and I was trying toΒ keep an eye on my two little helpers. πŸ™‚

My crockpot isn’t actually turned on. πŸ™‚ I decided to use the crockpot because I had a 2 1/2 quart round baking dish that fit perfectly inside to keep the cabbage packed together. I put three jars of spaghetti sauce in the bowl to add even more pressure.

I was surprised at how fast the brine was produced and I was equally surprised that it actually smelled like sauerkraut after only a few hours! πŸ™‚ And so now it’s sitting in my kitchen (smelling very sour) fermenting.

I’m looking forward to trying it in a few days! πŸ™‚

Wow! I love sauerkraut, but rarely have it {maybe if we’re at a German-esque restaurant}. I bet if I made it, I’d eat it more often. πŸ™‚
